"Rain Right" is a hit. It's almost disgusting, how popular it is. But at least once the benefit is over they can concentrate on things like Everyone in Purgatory, their next album. After the charity meltdown, things got back to normal pretty quickly. Or rather, their version of normal.

They have a release party when the album drops. Predictably, everyone gets wasted. And now that work is out of the way, Stephen has plenty of time to feel like a dick over the way he acted that day in the jam room. Moreover, from the way Alex treats him, it's like nothing has changed—like Alex didn't bare his soul and confess to a complicated relationship with Ben. Stephen can't handle it, especially not after wearing his heart on his sleeve the way he did.

He's since slowly put (sexual) distance between himself and the twins. They don't seem to mind so much, which just further cements his guest star role in their relationship. Fuckers.

Still, he feels like a jackass—whatever weird codependent thing the twins have going on, it's really not his business to get all up in it. He may be in love with Alex, but he just can't handle the idea of sharing him with Ben anymore. His unwillingness to get involved in the whole McMaster affair negates his claim on Alex, but there's still the little matter of them going behind Ben's back.

Stephen's not sure what possesses him to do it. He's going to say it was the tequila mixed with the weed.

First he confides to Max: "I slept with Alex."

She wrinkles her nose at him. "So? Lots of people do."

It's at this point that Stephen remembers Max would not get it. He also realizes that while public abasement may be a good start, the one he really needs to be honest with isn't Max, or Joseph, or Frieda, or that roadie with the plumber's crack thing going on.

So he finds Ben starring as the meat in a gorgeous blonde sandwich and says, "I need to talk to you."

Ben pats his new friends' cheeks and excuses himself. "Sorry, ladies—band business. I'll be back."

Stephen almost cracks up. Band business. Right. Once he lures Ben to a quiet corner of the party, he faces his bandmate and occasional incidental lover with an expression he hopes is sufficiently contrite.

"What's wrong?" Ben asks. The cloud of drink and smoke is fading from his eyes, like he knows he has to sober up at least a little for this.

"Ben, I'm really sorry. It shouldn't have happened, but it did." Ben's expression is becoming puzzled, and Stephen plows on. "I didn't want to cause trouble, but I want to be honest with you because we're friends and bandmates and this is just going to fester and get ugly and—"

"Spit it out, Stephen." Ben's tone is even and calm, but Stephen can sense the fury bubbling up underneath. Ben doesn't know why he's going to get mad, just that whatever Stephen says is going to make him angry.
